Recovery: A process by which an individual learns to thrive without the use of drugs or alcohol.

When a person enters recovery, the benefits extend far beyond that individual. A spouse, child and parent becomes available to their family and the consequences and volatility of substance abuse diminish greatly. A thriving business may get its owner or valued  employee back. Ultimately, taxpayers no longer shoulder the cost of addiction.

Project Ninety assists this process day-by-day, to strengthen the society we live in.

For more than three decades, Project Ninety, Inc. has served individuals, families and the Bay Area community through alcohol and substance abuse treatment services. What began in 1972 as several men working together to address their alcoholism/addiction has grown into a premier human services organization. Project Ninety has treated more than 15,000 individuals suffering from the disease of addiction. We are a private, nonprofit residential substance abuse treatment program based in San Mateo, California.

Project Ninety’s services are designed to treat the diverse community in which we live. We provide services to adults whose circumstances are varied. They might be homeless, highly educated, straight from prison or jail, highly skilled, unemployable or monolingual. All these people have their alcoholism/addiction in common, regardless of race, cultural background, education, age, or their life experience.

While at Project Ninety an addict takes responsibility for their recovery, learning how their addiction has created a path of destruction and how past behaviors perpetuated their addiction. There are many elements that must be addressed in order to support the recovery process. Project Ninety’s holistic approach to treatment includes: family group, which assists to improve family communication; addressing mental health issues; literacy enhancement; housing assistance; medical/dental/vision care; and job search skills — through its extensive network of collaborations.

Research has shown that every dollar spent on substance abuse treatment saves seven dollars in other taxpayer-supported services. These tax-driven services include frequent emergency room visits, use of emergency responders, psychiatric services and jails/prisons — just to name a few. Statistics also indicate that approximately eleven million children in the United States live in homes where there is at least one parent that is a substance abuser.

Project Ninety, through its treatment, helps reduce the burden addiction has on the community. The community includes families, children, neighbors, and employers. To add perspective for those who support Project Ninety financially: a donation helps the community in both tangible and intangible ways that far exceed the actual monetary contribution. Treatment has a true exponential effect; research shows treatment can lead to reductions in traffic fatalities, crime, unwanted pregnancies, child abuse, HIV, and even heart disease.

As the chart below shows, 90 cents out of every dollar spent at Project Ninety goes to services that directly benefit clients.

Clients who complete the Project Ninety program have improved mental, physical, social, and financial wellbeing and are able to return to work. In its 33 years of providing treatment, Project Ninety has seen thousands of addicts remain clean and sober. They have flourished economically, spiritually, and in their family relationships. Families have been reunited and parents have become role models for their children. They have given back to the community from which they once only took.  Their transformations have been sometimes dramatic, and always inspiring.
